Imagine if it was one of those odd days, when daddy was in an unusually super good mood. Perhaps he saw your Grade 10 half yearly report or your hifz ustaaz put a good word for you for a change.

So he calls you and says: “Son! Since you’ve done me proud, I’d like to buy you something. I have two things in mind. You can choose.” Then he pulls out his iPhone 5s and shows you the picture of a stunning “sooped up” plastic three wheeler scooter and of a not-so-appealing top of the range Kawasaki super bike and asks you to choose between the two.

What will your response be … “Come on daddy! I’m not sooo mad. How can you even ask? The answer is just so obvious. I must be the stupidest person under the sun to choose the plastic scooter.”

Beloved buddies! While we believe the one who chooses the plastic three-wheeler is the stupidest person under the sun, have we realised how we have made an even stupider choice in a much more important issue … the issue of “who we have taken as our heroes in life and from whom we are taking our direction.”

On the one hand we have the “glorified” and seemingly “cool” but actually hollow and value-less life of the Western celebrities, which ultimately leads to eternal ruin and destruction. On the hand there is the seemingly boring yet rich and enjoyable life of the illustrious companions of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the pious predecessors which guarantees us pleasure in both the worlds.

Since we unfortunately don’t really know much regarding these perfect role models and real heroes, we choose not to follow them. Therefore, insha-Allah in this series, titled “Live the Legacy”, we wish to discuss the life of an amazing young Sahaabi of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma), highlighting those aspects that we can relate to and emulate, so that we may live the great legacy that he has left behind for us and become true “believers” and not “beliebers”.
